One Parent Families Scotland has signed a joint letter with Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations (SCVO) and the Scottish Federation of Housing Associations (SFHA) to Esther McVey MP, the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, calling for a halt to the rollout of Universal Credit.

OPFS Director Satwat Rehman said today:

“Increased funding will not address the central problems of Universal Credit delivery. The benefit’s design assumes people have 6-weeks living expenses in the bank, have internet access and IT skills. Our evidence from single parents show it throws them into debt, rent arrears and foodbank use. It fails to take into account the lives of real people struggling against poverty. OPFS wants to see a social security system which ensures financial security for families – one that is linked to financial and personal need, removes the use of benefit caps and punitive sanctions and genuinely makes work pay. It is time for a system which prevents poverty, treats people with dignity and respect and supports everyone to flourish.”
